(@JaneyJusticeXXX requested this story) its a rush job, but im doing my post gym nap now so i hope i remember details.

the seed was such an afterthought. i just finished recording the drums for a phrenology cut that didnt make the album. i was in a rush to take my girl at the time to go see spiderman. with minutes to spare i was halfway out of electric lady studios when my manager reminded me that cody was flying in that night. of course i was like "dude i got a date" but he guilted me into at least demoing the song so cody could sing his parts and then i could come back later and redo the music. so i said ill miss the previews and knock this song out real quick and rush to theater in time to meet my less than patient date.

since russ elevaado hates pro tools we recorded the entire album on a slow reel to reel. so if one mistake is made and you have to re do it the rewind process of the tape can be like 3 mins. which is a lifetime if you have your jacket zipped up and a bagpack on your back and you just wanna play a simple rock pattern to an unwritten song (@tariqtrotter took 4 months to decide on a verse) for 4 minutes.

i did one take with the song in my head but since there was no real thought out process map like "tairq for 16 bars, cody for 8 bars, bridge here and chorus there" i was just drumming the beat out and thought "let em figure it out"---

but of course manager was in room like "stop playin and draw us a damn map"--

date was like "um hello!!" texting me.

russ was like "lemme rewind the tape"

since ben kenny was there with me working on "something in the way of things" earlier that week (of course i am assuming you have the entire phrenology album) he has a bass (hub was in philly) i told him to demo the bass so i can count the structure of the song in my head...

many ask why did i leave the false start in the song instead of a proper count off

plain and simple: hell hath no fury like a woman stood up. i told her id be outside theater at 815, and now its 836 and im lying ass off like "im a block away"

i count the song off and dropped the sticks mid intro....but i am NOT gonna waste no time for a movie that is about to start at 845 on the nose.

so you can hear me yelling at russ and (then) my assistant engineer steve to "keep it rollin!!!!!!!!!!" as in "dont stop the damn tape i dont got no more time for this ish!"

i rush through the song. no click track no regard no care.

its gonna be a cool song. but no way in the world will this ever be a single from the kangs of mellow neo soul right?. you can hear me rush out the squeaky door as the cymbal shatter of the last "rock n roll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" rattle played some 20 seconds as i was trying to hail a cab on 8th street.

believe it or not i made it to theater at 8:50 having only missed 5 mins which in black mans time was like being on time. she of course wasn't surprised i was late and was mad.

meanwhile the biggest song of my career was in the can and that is the LEAST amount of prepping/thinking ive ever done for a non skit/interlude for a Roots album (actually rising down's "75 bars" is a close second, but again i had no clue i was being recorded so i was just messing around and nailed it without knowing.)
